Cloudflare Opens Beta for Pay-Per-Use API Access by AI Agents

Cloudflare launched a closed beta of its Monetization Gateway, letting website and API owners charge AI agents per request using the HTTP 402 status code instead of subscriptions. Ceramic.ai, Stocktwits, API2PDF and Cloudflare's own AI Gateway are already using it in production, settling payments in USDC on the Base blockchain via Coinbase's x402 protocol.

What changes for operators — For a 10-200 person B2B company, this matters two ways. If you run internal or client-facing automation that calls third-party APIs or AI tools, pay-per-use pricing via HTTP 402 could replace fixed subscription costs with consumption-based billing that scales more predictably with actual agent usage.
